HRDA Frankly Speaking: Why 83% of Workers are Done with “Employer Dependency”

The traditional safety net of a corporate 9-to-5 is fraying. A new survey from The Entrepreneur’s Source reveals that a staggering 83% of Americans now see business ownership as a more reliable path than a traditional job. Why? Because in an era of AI and sudden layoffs, workers are realizing that the biggest risk isn’t starting a business—it’s staying dependent on someone else’s decisions.

As Marissa Frois, CEO of The Entrepreneur’s Source, points out, the modern worker is no longer looking for a “boss”; they are looking for control.

3 Ways for HR to Build “Career Insurance”

If your employees feel that their only path to security is to leave, it’s time to change the internal narrative. You can bridge the gap by offering “Intrapreneurship”—the ability to act like an owner within your company.

Here are 3 ways to offer your employees ownership today:

  1. Grant Decision Rights: Stop micromanaging workflows. Give employees the “decision rights” over their tools and schedules to mimic the freedom of being an owner.
  2. Create “Mini-Business” Units: Assign a project or product line to a small team and give them a transparent “personal scoreboard.” When people see how their effort directly moves the needle on revenue, they feel an ownership stake.
  3. Position AI Training as an Asset: 61% of workers fear AI disruption. Offer internal AI academies that build “portable” skills. Show them that staying with your company is the fastest way to master the tech that will future-proof their entire career.
